McKinney was one of ten Texas communities to receive the Governor’s Community Achievement Award, one of the most prestigious annual environmental awards in Texas. The award is a joint effort between the Texas Department of Transportation and Keep Texas Beautiful.
The award honors the 10 Texas communities with the best grassroots environmental programs in the state, awarding the winners with funds for landscaping along a state right-of-way. The funding is based on population; McKinney’s share of the $2 million in overall funding is $290,000.
The award was presented at the Keep Texas Beautiful "How Sweet It Is" Annual Conference in Sugarland, Texas in June 2016. Texas Department of Transportation compiled the video above which was shown during the official award presentation.
A community’s environmental program is judged on achievements in seven different areas:
Community leadership and coordination
Litter prevention and cleanup
Litter law and illegal dumping enforcement
Beautification and community improvement
