The City of McKinney Parks and Recreation Department was presented two awards by the Texas Recreation and Park Society (TRAPS) North Region at the annual conference hosted in Denton, Texas on Nov. 3.

“The Parks and Recreation Department is exceedingly thrilled and honored to be recognized for these awards. We are committed to meeting the needs of our community, and the success of these endeavors has far exceeded our expectations,” said Michael Kowski, Director of Parks and Recreation.

The city’s new aquatics and fitness facility in Gabe Nesbitt Community Park, the Apex Centre, won the Recreation Facility Design Excellence Award which recognizes a recreation facility project for displaying a high degree of professional design quality, innovation and originality, as well as recreational usage and cooperation between design professionals and parks and recreation professionals.

The 80,000-square-foot facility includes a 25-yard-by-25-meter pool for competitive and lap swimming, a leisure pool and an outdoor leisure and recreation pool. Additionally, the Apex Centre includes a fitness facility, weight training equipment, basketball courts, an elevated track, supervised playroom and multipurpose rooms.

The Parks and Recreation Department also won the Communications Award for its social media campaign to promote the new Parks Bingo Program. The program was launched as a new way to encourage residents to 'Get Their Play On' by exploring parks, facilities, programs and recreation activities offered in the city. The month-long program had more than 700 participants play and attend different activities or facilities highlighted on the bingo board. Marketing on social media for the program reached more than 50,000 residents, successfully creating unique impressions for the Parks and Recreation Department.
