What is GIS?
A geographic information system (GIS) is a computer-based tool for mapping and analyzing things that exist and events that happen on earth. GIS technology integrates common database operations such as query and statistical analysis with the unique visualization and geographic analysis benefits offered by maps. These abilities distinguish GIS from other information systems and make it valuable to a wide range of public and private enterprises for explaining events, predicting outcomes and planning strategies.

Current Status of GIS
The City of McKinney started its GIS program in February of 1999. The zoning, subdivision, street centerline and future land use layers have been edited and coded with useful attributes. Some user friendly applications using ESRI ArcGIS Desktop, a popular desktop GIS software package, are under development for city employees to easily access the GIS database and to reduce the time spent researching information.

Proposed Applications

• Parcel database for zoning notification, demographic analysis and multiple analytical projects
• Street right of way, utility and stormwater system mapping
• Public availability through Internet
• Crime and accident location analysis
• Connections with building permit system
• Other long-term priorities to be identified through citywide committees
