Water Bill Questions
The city Utility Billing office has responded to calls from concerned customers asking about water bills that are much higher than they have been in the past months and years. Water users are facing this same issue across the region, and the explanation is usually simply a matter of higher usage. In May, cities across North Texas revised landscape watering regulations to allow twice weekly watering. This change in allowed usage is a big change from the previous restrictions of once every two weeks. In addition, many lawns did not need watering during the spring because of the above-average rainfall. Recent data from water bills indicate usage in July was lower than August, likely due to heavy rains in June and higher temperatures in August.

Higher Water Usages Due to Irrigation
To date, all customers who have called city water offices with billing questions have experienced an increased bill due to higher water usage for irrigation. About 60% of McKinney water customers have digital 3G meters/registers and can easily see the exact usage and the time of day watering occurs. All water customers are planned to have these meters installed by the end of 2016. If you do not have a new digital meter, you can call the Utility Billing office at 972-547-7550 for more information about installing one.

Estimate Your Water Usage
We encourage residents to check the settings on irrigation systems for how often they are set to run and how long the cycles last. To help residents calculate their water use related to irrigation, the city has prepared a worksheet. Read the instructions and download the worksheet online. In addition to checking usage, also check for possible leaks in your systems. Leaks can occur if systems have been shut off for an extended period of time, and they can also be present in places like toilets.
