Emergency Water Shutoff
Turning off Your Water Pipe Schematic
There may be occasions when you need to turn off your water, such as when fixing a dripping faucet, replacing a water heater or installing an irrigation system. If you have a burst pipe or other water emergency, you may need to turn off all water coming to your home. Instructions are available below, or call us 24/7 at 972-547-7550.

Interior Shutoff Valves
Turning one of these off may take care of the leak. If not, try turning off the water outside. These interior valves are typically found in the following places:
  • Inside the bathroom and kitchen cabinets under the sink
  • Behind toilets
  • Above water heaters
  • In the laundry room

Exterior Shut-Off Valves
There are two main outside water shut-offs for most homes:
  • One is usually located below the hose bib on the front of the house two or three feet from the wall in an in-ground concreteWater shut-off box or plastic valve box. It is best to find and use the homeowner's outside shutoff first. If you do not have this shutoff valve, the city's water meter box is your best bet.
  • The city's water meter box is typically located on the street side of the house. To shut off the water at the city meter, you will usually need a meter key and either a crescent wrench, channel lock or a specialty tool found at hardware stores. Most city valves only require a half turn clockwise to shut off the water.

Once you have found these shut-offs you'll know right where to go if you have an emergency. You might even tag your shut-offs since you typically don’t use them except in an emergency.
