Mr. John Gay, a local attorney, was a member of the City Council from 1985 to 1991. The Gays have been strong community leaders through the years, lending their support to many local charities and worthwhile organizations. In 1991, Mr. Gay became the Mayor and served until 1997. Mrs. Judy Gay was a McKinney High School English teacher from 1979 to 1986 and is a realtor. They have both been strong supporters of the library. Mrs. Gay has served on the Library Board.
The John and Judy Gay Library was dedicated on December 10, 2009 with both Mr. and Mrs. Gay in attendance. In honor of the 2020 expansion of the John and Judy Gay Library, the Gay's donated a bronze statue of two playful children for the outdoor recreational space.
