Operational Permits - PDFs
The McKinney Fire Department requires the following operational permits. Complete and submit the appropriate permit application and additional documentation for your operation to the Fire Marshal’s Office. Each permit application must be accompanied by a $100 permit fee. Permits must be renewed annually. If your facility or business needs more than four permits, your maximum fee will still be $400.
- Amusement buildings | Operation of a special amusement building.
- Carnivals and fairs | Permit required for operation of a carnival or fair.
- Flammable combustible liquids at construction sites |Temporary use and dispensing of diesel or gasoline at a construction site.
- Hazardous materials | Store, transport on-site, dispense, use or handle hazardous materials.
- HPM facilities | Storage, handling or use of hazardous production materials.
- High-piled storage | Use of a building or portion of a building as a high-piled storage area exceeding 500 square feet.
- LP-gas exchange | Storage, use and handling of a consumer propane exchange operation.
- Motor fuel-dispensing facilities | Operation of automotive, marine and fleet motor fuel-dispensing facilities.
- Open burning | Kindling or maintaining an open fire or a fire on any public street, alley, road or other public or private ground. Instructions and stipulations of the permit must be followed. Open burning must be in accordance with the Open Burning Ordinance 2018-01-003.
- Places of assembly. Operate a place of assembly, such as a church, restaurant or gymnasium. What is an assembly?
- Pyrotechnic special effects material | Use and handling of pyrotechnic special effects material.
- Repair garages | Operation of a motor vehicle repair garage.
- Temporary membrane structures and tents | Operate an air-supported temporary membrane structure, a temporary stage canopy or cumulative tent area in excess of 400 square feet.
- Carbon Dioxide Beverage Dispensing.
- Spraying or Dipping Flammable Combustible Finishes | Spraying or dipping operation using flammable or combustible liquids, or the application of combustible powder. Examples may include, paint spray booth, powder coating, painting operations, chemical dipping, spray on truck bed liners, or spray foam insulation.
- Dry Cleaning | An operational permit is required to engage in the business of dry cleaning or to change to a more hazardous cleaning solvent used in existing dry cleaning equipment.
- Open Flames and Candles | An operational permit is required to use open flames or candles in connection with assembly areas, dining areas of restaurants or drinking establishments.
Annual Self-Evaluation Program
This program allows a business owner to conduct their own fire-safety review, avoid business interruptions, and save money through an exemption of accessible fees for annual inspections.
Your business may be eligible if:
- Under 5,000 total square feet
- Considered light-hazard / low-risk
- Do NOT have a fire sprinkler, fire alarm, or kitchen hood suppression system
- Do NOT require an annual operational permit
If you believe you are eligible for the self-evaluation program:
- Submit a request for verification
- If eligible to participate you will receive a code to enter on the online evaluation form.
If you have received a verification code:
- Complete Inspection form - and you are done for the year!
Continued Participation
In order to continue to participate and receive the benefits of the the Business Self-Evaluation Programs you must:
- Submit a request and conduct an evaluation annually
- Correct all deficiencies found in your evaluations
- Every third year must have an Fire Department on-site inspection.
