1. How are projects prioritized and chosen?

Every potential project is evaluated by several parameters including stormwater capacity, channel stability, maintenance access and economics. The projects are then prioritized and scheduled in order of priority.

3. How are these projects funded?

These projects are funded by the Surface Drainage Utility System (SDUS) fee of $4 per month on residential water bills.

4. What kinds of projects does the Street Department’s drainage crew address?

The Street Department’s drainage crew usually handles two project types: flood prevention and streambank stabilization. On a streambank stabilization project, erosion is mitigated by several methods – installation of gabion structures, bioengineering measures (plants), rock rip rap, etc.

Flood prevention usually involves unclogging ditches or inlets after heavy rainfalls.

5. Will I need to provide easements if improvements are made on my property?

It depends on the complexity of the project. Many times permission from the property owner is all that is needed to do work on a property; other times an easement is needed to do the work.

6. Will trees be removed?

City staff will follow the tree protection ordinance and make sure that no protected tree species will be removed. Small brush and dead trees will usually be removed from the project site.
